Mljet National Park makes up most of the island, and there are several villages, two salt water lakes – Veliko and Malo jezero, and a Benedictine monastery on the island of sv. Marija [St. Mary]. The access to the National park is at the north or western coast through villages Pomena and Polače.
Many people begin their exploration of Mljet in village Polače. It is a small port in the gulf, sheltered behind tiny islands, with dozens of restaurants and few souvenir shops, where you can buy tickets for entrance.
The other way to reach the National park is from the small village Pomena. This fishermans place is wonderful for lovers of unspoiled nature, who enjoy listening to the sounds of silence and the sea.
Mljet is full of caves and ground erosions from its location on the Mediterranean sea and the most famous one is the Odyssey’s Cave, which you can access only with a speedboat.
If you prefer relaxing on sandy beach you need to visit Saplunara which may be the last hidden jewel left in the Adriatic. Saplunara remains isolated and largely untouched. Its beauty is truly a balm to the soul.
